A case of overseas job and travel fraud has come to light in Moga district, where a woman was allegedly cheated of ₹7 lakh and her passport after being promised an opportunity to go abroad. The Mehana police station has registered an FIR against two travel agents and initiated an investigation into the matter.
According to the complaint filed by Harvinder Singh, a resident of Chugawan village, the accused Puneet Dhir of Guruharsahai and Kunwarjeet Singh Sethi of Ludhiana assured him that they would arrange for his wife, Sarabjit Kaur, to travel abroad. On the basis of this promise, the accused allegedly took her passport and collected ₹7 lakh from the family.
Harvinder Singh stated that after receiving the money, the accused sent photographs of visa stickers via WhatsApp, claiming that the visa process had been completed. However, it was later discovered that the visa stickers were fake. Despite repeated assurances, Sarabjit Kaur was neither sent abroad nor was her passport returned.
The complainant further alleged that the accused later entered into a settlement, promising to return the money and the passport. As per the agreement, they assured that ₹1 lakh would be paid once the passport was handed back. However, the accused allegedly failed to honor the settlement, continued to mislead the family by sending fake visa images, and did not refund the ₹7 lakh.
Taking the matter seriously, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Moga, directed the DSP City Moga to conduct a detailed inquiry. Following a preliminary investigation, Mehana police registered a case against both travel agents on charges of cheating and fraud.
Police officials said further investigation is underway to determine whether the accused were involved in similar frauds with other victims. Appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
