Karnal: Police have arrested a woman accused of cheating a local resident of ₹14.12 lakh on the pretext of sending him to Canada. The accused, identified as Smriti, a resident of Suhana Heights Apartments in SAS Nagar, Mohali, was taken into custody and produced before a court, which granted police a two-day remand.
According to Sadar Police Station in-charge Tarsem Chand, the case was registered on October 14, 2025, based on a complaint filed by Nikhil Tyagi. The complainant alleged that Smriti and her associates had promised to arrange his immigration to Canada but instead defrauded him of ₹14,12,000.
Police officials said that during the investigation, one of the accused, Sunandan Pathania, had already been arrested earlier in connection with the case. With Smriti’s arrest, the police now hope to uncover the full details of the fraud network.
Authorities added that the accused will be interrogated thoroughly during the remand period to determine the extent of the scam and identify any additional people involved. Further action will be taken based on the findings.
