The United States has significantly tightened its visa screening process for H-1B and H-4 applicants, triggering concerns among skilled workers and their families across the globe, including thousands in India. As part of enhanced vetting measures, the US Embassy in India has issued a worldwide alert warning applicants to prepare for longer processing timelines.
According to the advisory, beginning December 15, the US Department of State has expanded its review of applicants’ online and social media presence for all H-1B and H-4 visa applicants, irrespective of nationality. The embassy clarified that this step is now part of standard visa screening procedures and will be implemented globally.
Officials stated that the expanded scrutiny aims to curb misuse and abuse of the H-1B visa program while ensuring that American companies can continue hiring highly skilled foreign professionals. However, the move is expected to slow down visa approvals, adding uncertainty for applicants already facing delays.
“This vetting is being conducted worldwide for all applicants of all nationalities applying for H-1B and H-4 visas,” the embassy noted, adding that the process is designed to strengthen program integrity without shutting doors to legitimate talent.
The embassy has advised applicants to plan well in advance and submit their visa applications as early as possible. While US embassies and consulates continue to accept and process applications, officials have cautioned that additional processing time should be anticipated due to the enhanced background checks.
The announcement comes amid growing anxiety over extended visa backlogs and policy uncertainty surrounding the H-1B program. Many skilled workers fear that prolonged delays could put jobs at risk, disrupt family plans, and push relocation timelines well into late 2026.
