Ahmedabad: The City Crime Branch of Ahmedabad has registered a police case against a city resident and an unidentified accomplice for allegedly using forged degree documents to obtain a USA H-1B work visa, officials said. Fake Degree Scam
According to police officials, the complaint was lodged with the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) by Inspector J K Makwana following an official visa related reference received by the unit on May 29, 2025. The matter came to light during routine verification linked to a USA visa application.
As per the FIR, Jay Patel, a resident of Amco Society in Ghatlodia, applied online for a USA H-1B visa on April 7, 2025. During the application process, Patel submitted copies of his passport along with degree certificates and its semester wise marksheets, which were claimed to be issued by the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (RGITM).
However, during his interview at the US Consulate General in Hyderabad, Patel reportedly admitted that the degree certificates and his marksheets were arranged by a woman identified only as “Dhruti.” Police officials said her complete identity and address are yet to be established.
Following this disclosure, the DCB conducted verification with RGITM, Delhi, which confirmed that the educational degree documents submitted in Patel’s name were prima facie forged and fake, officials said.
Based on the findings, the City Crime Branch has registered an offence under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for cheating, forgery, and use of forged documents. Police are now investigating the role of the unidentified accomplice and possible involvement of a wider fake degree or visa fraud racket.
Officials stated that further investigation is underway to determine whether similar forged documents were used in other visa applications.
