Travel to the United Kingdom is set to undergo a major change from 25 February 2026, as the UK government moves to fully enforce its Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) scheme. Under the new rules, visitors from 85 visa-free countries, including the United States, Canada, France, and other European nations, will not be allowed to travel to the UK without advance digital permission (No ETA, No Travel). ETA Becomes Mandatory for UK Entry
From February 2026, all non-visa nationals will be required to hold either a UK ETA or an E-Visa before boarding flights, ferries, or trains bound for the UK. Airlines and other carriers will be legally required to verify digital travel authorization before allowing passengers to travel.
This means travelers who arrive at the airport without an approved ETA will be denied boarding, even if they previously traveled visa-free.
Who Needs a UK ETA?
The ETA requirement applies to short-term visitors from countries that do not normally need a UK visa, including:
- United States
- Canada
- France
- Most EU and Schengen countries
- Several Asia-Pacific and Latin American nations
The rule also applies to travelers transiting through the UK if they pass through UK passport control.
UK Government: Security and Seamless Travel
Since its launch in October 2023, the ETA scheme has already been used by more than 13.3 million visitors, according to UK government data. Officials say the system allows authorities to screen travelers before arrival while improving border efficiency.
Minister for Migration and Citizenship Mike Tapp said the move strengthens border control while enhancing the travel experience.
“ETAs give us greater power to stop those who pose a threat from setting foot in the country and provide a clearer picture of immigration,” he said. “Digitizing the system also ensures smoother travel for the millions of visitors we welcome every year.”
UK ETA Application Process and Cost
Applying for a UK ETA is done online through the official UK ETA app. The current fee is £16, making it comparable to similar systems such as the US ESTA and Canada’s eTA.
Most applicants receive approval within minutes, but travelers are advised to apply at least three working days in advance in case additional checks are required.
Once approved, the ETA is digitally linked to the passport, eliminating the need for physical documents.
Exemptions and Warning for Dual Citizens
British and Irish citizens, including dual nationals, are exempt from the ETA requirement. However, the UK government has issued a clear warning to dual British citizens to ensure they travel using a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement.
Failure to do so could result in boarding denial once enforcement begins in February 2026.
