Immigration Business in Punjab Shrinks by Nearly 90% Amid Fraud, Rejections and Stricter Visa Rules

The once thriving immigration consultancy business in the Punjab region has witnessed a dramatic collapse, with industry experts estimating a decline of nearly 90 percent. Rising cases of fraud, a sharp surge in visa rejections, and tightening immigration policies by developed countries have severely damaged the sector’s credibility and sustainability.

Consultants say that scams committed in the name of work visas, school visas and student visas have eroded public trust. At the same time, stricter scrutiny by foreign embassies and frequent visa refusals have made overseas migration far more difficult, pushing genuine applicants away from agents.

According to police records, around 300 immigration companies are currently active in Chandigarh. Just a few years ago, this number exceeded 2,000. A major reason behind the decline has been the unchecked operation of unlicensed or expired-license firms. Many companies continued business even after their licenses lapsed, often without attempting renewal. The lack of timely enforcement allowed fraudulent practices to spread, eventually tarnishing the reputation of the entire industry.

Stricter Global Policies and Deportations Add Pressure

The situation has been further aggravated by global policy shifts. Continuous deportation of Indian nationals from the United States, along with tougher visa norms in Canada and Australia, has played a significant role in the downturn. Developed countries such as the US, Canada, the UK and Australia are now prioritizing only highly skilled workers and applicants who can demonstrate strong economic contributions.

In addition, the growing use of official portals like VFS and direct online embassy applications has reduced dependence on private agents, leaving many consultancies without business.

Visa Rejection Rates Raise Alarm

Industry insiders point to alarming visa rejection data as a key factor behind the collapse. In August 2025, Canada reportedly recorded a 74 percent rejection rate for Indian student visa applications. Australia saw a rejection rate of 24.3 percent, particularly linked to cases involving fake or misleading documents from Punjab and Haryana. In the United States, the rejection rate for F-1 student visas stood at 41 percent, while tourist visa refusals touched nearly 20 percent.

Experts Speak Out

“Chandigarh Tricity was once considered the hub of immigration services. Rampant fraud shattered public confidence. Today, only about 10 percent of the business remains,” said an immigration consultant.

Another consultant, echoed similar concerns. “Deportations, strict visa rules and cheating by agents have destroyed the credibility of immigration services. Earlier, the Tricity name inspired trust; now, people approach with suspicion.”

Experts warn that unless fraud is curbed and strict action is taken against illegal operators, the situation could deteriorate further, potentially wiping out what little remains of the immigration consultancy business in the region.
